King of Spain International Journalism Awards recognize professionals from six Latin American countries

Journalists and writers from Brazil, Bolivia, Cuba, Colombia, Mexico and Uruguay were honored on March 27 with the King of Spain International Journalism Awards.

The awards, given annually by Agencia EFE and the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation for Development (Aecid) since 1982, were handed out at Casa de América in Madrid by King Felipe VI.

According to EFE, this award has recognized the rigorous work and social content of Ibero-American professionals.

The awards were announced on Jan. 24, 2017.

Of the 196 participants in seven categories, the winners of the Awards this year were:

1. Vinicius Jorge Carneiro Sassine, Brazilian journalist, won in the Press category The award was received for his report on the ongoing refusal of the Brazilian Air Force to transport organs for transplant, published in newspaper O Globo.

2. Carlos Loret de Mola, Mexican journalist, won the prize for Television for his report on the exodus of Syrian refugees, broadcast by Televisa

3. Jordi Basté, Catalan journalist, won in the category of Radio for his program El Mon on RAC1, and his coverage about the attacks in Paris in 2015

4. Yander Alberto Zamora de los Reyes, Cuban photojournalist, won for Photography for his photo of “The Arrival of Air Force One” to Cuba, published by Reuters, about Barack Obama’s visit to Havana in 2016

5. Gregorio Rodíguez Ramos, Spanish journalist, won the Digital Journalism Award, representing the specials team of newspaper El País, for the special “40 Years of 20 N.” It dealt with the transformation of Spain 40 years after the death of dictator Francisco Franco

6. Genciano Pedriel Jate, of Bolivia, and Javier Saura, of Spain, received an honorable mention in the Digital Journalism category for their interactive work about maternal mortality in the Bolivian highlands

7. Patricia Gómez, of Colombia, received the Ibero-American Special Award for Environmental Journalism and Sustainable Development, for her report “Lead: invisible poison,” broadcast on RCN Televisión

8. Carmen Posadas, Uruguayan-Spanish writer, was given the Ibero-American Journalism Award for her work “Dreaming in Spanish”

The King of Spain said during the ceremony that this edition of the awards possibly included all Ibero-American countries in the world.

The winners each received 6,000 euros (about US $6,521), plus a bronze sculpture by Spanish artist Joaquín Vaquero Turcios.
