Latin American journalists from ten countries take home IAPA awards for Excellence in Journalism

Journalists from ten Latin American countries are among the winners of the 2017 Excellence in Journalism Awards from the Inter American Press Association (IAPA).

The awards, meant to “encourage excellence in journalism and defense of freedom of expression throughout the Americas,” were announced Aug. 18.

In addition, the organization awarded its Press Freedom Grand Prize to Luis Almagro, Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS). The Venezuelan independent press was also recognized with an honorable mention for “keeping the people informed despite censorship and repression by the Chavista regime.”

The winners were chosen from a pool of more than 1,000 entries, according to Marcela Noble Herrera of Grupo Clarín who is chair of the Awards Committee.

Media organizations and journalists were recognized from Argentina, Brazil, Ecuador, Chile, Colombia, El Salvador, Mexico, Panama, Peru, Venezuela and the United States. In addition to professional journalists, the IAPA recognized projects by university students with its Pedro Joaquín Chamorro University Journalism award.

The IAPA awards, which include US $2,000 and a diploma, will be presented at the IAPA 73rd General Assembly in Salt Lake City, Utah from Oct. 27 to 30.

The winners in the 13 categories of the Excellence in Journalism awards are below:
