A Mexican official accused the newspaper La Jornada of altering a photograph of a meeting during the Fifth Presidential Report on Sept. 2, that he said never happened.
Mexican Secretary of Labor Javier Lozano said over Twitter that the Sept. 3 front page of the newspaper contained an altered photo where he appears next to the three major parties' presidential hopefuls. The others in the photo included Governor of Nuevo León Rodrigo Medina, Mayor of Mexico City Marcelo Ebrard, Secretary of Finance Ernesto Cordero and Enrique Peña Nieto, governor of the State of Mexico. None of the others photographed have questioned the veracity of the photo.
Lozano also sent a letter to the national newspaper saying, "There was not a single instant that I could have met those four." La Jornada responded, "We recommend the secretary see his optometrist and psychiatrist at once."
In a previous interview with Milenio Televisión, Lozano said he would not seek charges against the newspaper for the photo, "I believe there has never been freedom of expression and a press like there is now." The secretary also speculated that the image was also altered to make the mayor of Mexico City appear to smile with his rivals.
