On June 20, the Network for Diversity in Latin American Journalism will begin its second series of webinars to promote diversity, equity and inclusion in Latin American newsrooms through greater coverage of diversity issues and from a perspective of human rights.
The series, which is in Spanish and has the support of the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas, begins on Tuesday, June 20 with the webinar "Stories with LGBTQI+ pride." The conversation will be moderated by journalist Daniel Villatoro. Arlen Molina Villaseñor, journalist and content creator, who collaborates with Volcánicas and is a member of RedLATAM, will participate.
Fabrizio Sánchez, journalist and member of the Venezuelan Observatory of LGBTQI+ Violence, and Agustina Ramos, journalist at Agencia Presentes and Agencia Telam will also be present.
In this conversation, the journalists will share their experiences telling stories about the LGBTQI+ community to highlight good practices and what makes them proud of their coverage, how they have done it, and to go a little beyond the focus of negative experiences that are sometimes associated with these topics.
The second webinar "Feminist journalism in perspective: deconstructing myths" will be held on Tuesday, June 27, also at 5 p.m. Mexico time, and will be moderated by journalist and editor Lucia Solis Reymer. You can register for the session here.
Participating in the talk will be Michelle Nogales, co-founder of Revista MuyWaso; Alejandra Higareda, general director of Malvestida, and Graciela Tiburcio Loayza, feminist journalist specializing in gender and human rights.
The third session of the series will continue on Tuesday, July 4, at 5 p.m., with the panel "How to cover gender violence journalistically," which will be moderated by journalist and lawyer Pilar Cuartas. Participants will be Leila Mesyngier, coordinator editorial of Revista Anfibia, and Mexican journalist and writer Lydiette Carrión. You can register for the session here.
This webinar will address the types of violence, how to help prevent it, what good practices have been implemented and how to avoid sensationalizing this violence.
And finally, this second series of webinars will conclude on July 11, at 5 p.m., with the session led by journalist Mariana Alvarado. "Disinformation, audiences and dangerous discourses on diversity issues” will feature the participation of Daniela Mendoza, director of Verificado Mx, and María Teresa Juárez, co-director of Red Periodistas de a Pie. The speakers will address aspects such as the consequences of disinformation and how they impact decision-making in audiences and in relation to diversity issues on a daily basis.
This is the second series of webinars carried out by the Network for Diversity in Latin American Journalism. The first took place between January and March 2023 and was attended by more than 1,000 journalists from 16 countries. In that first series, journalists addressed topics such as myths about diversity, migration, gender perspective and inclusion of LGBTQI+ people in newsrooms. People who attend the four sessions of this second series of webinars will be able to obtain a certificate of participation from the Network for Diversity in Latin American Journalism.
The Network for Diversity in Latin American Journalism began its activities at the end of 2022 with the assistance of the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas and Google News Initiative. In addition to previous webinars, the network has trained various media outlets in the region on diversity issues and has organized two international conferences on the topic.
