There’s no question that generative artificial intelligence, like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, is changing and will alter the way journalists work.
To prepare for those shifts, the Journalism Courses program from the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas is offering a free webinar.
“Generative AI: What journalists need to know about ChatGPT and other tools” will be on Thursday Aug. 17, 2023 at 11 AM U.S. Central Time. Click here to find the time in your city. This hour-long webinar will be held in English, with simultaneous interpretation to Spanish and Portuguese.

Marc Lavallee, director of technology product and strategy for journalism at Knight Foundation, will moderate the panel that includes Aimee Rinehart, senior product manager AI strategy for the Associated Press’ Local News AI initiative; and Sil Hamilton, a machine learning engineer and AI researcher-in-residence at the journalism organization Hacks/Hackers.
“I think what we are experiencing and witnessing right now is a lot of questioning. It's this period of examination,” Lavallee said during a popular panel on generative AI last April at the International Symposium on Online Journalism (ISOJ), which is also a program of the Knight Center.
“I think we're simultaneously trying to really understand the capabilities that have emerged in the past handful of months and what we do about those and how we take advantage of those, while also really trying to make sure that we are poised for what feels like another wave upon wave of progress over the next couple of years as well,” Lavallee said.
Since the ISOJ conference, the growth of generative AI has not slowed down and neither has the exploration of tools by journalists who are trying to figure out how it will fit into their daily routines.
During the webinar, the Knight Center will announce a new massive open online course (MOOC) on generative AI and journalism. More details will be given on Aug. 17.
