A spokesperson for President Mauricio Funes of El Salvador said the country is "committed to guaranteeing the safety" of journalists working for the digital newspaper El Faro, reported the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ).
El Faro's journalists have reported threats and persecution ever since the publication of a report about an alleged pact between the government and criminal gangs to lower the country's homicide rate, which is one of the highest in the world.
The government told CPJ that the security ministry had a "responsibility to give protection to any Salvadoran who is at risk and is threatened."
