"The Brazilian Association of Investigative Journalism (Abraji) and six other organizations related to the defense of freedom of expression and of the press released this Tuesday, March 15, a joint statement asking for justice for the murder of radio broadcaster Valério Luiz de Oliveira. Known for his critical sports coverage, Valério Luiz was shot dead as he left the radio station where he worked in Goiânia, Brazil, on July 5, 2012. According to the police investigation, five people were involved in the crime, in addition to a principal, the then vice president of the Atlético Clube Goianiense soccer club, Maurício Borges Sampaio. To date, no one has been punished.

In the statement, the organizations emphasize that 'violations against journalists represent violations of the fundamental and human right to freedom of expression; and impunity, in this sense, is a means of silencing.' In addition, they call for the need for the murder trial to finally take place, so 'it can bring justice to the victim's family and mark a milestone in the fight against impunity in crimes against journalists in the country'."
