Acquittal of Mexican journalist Carmen Olsen is 'an achievement for freedom of expression'

“Journalist Carmen Olsen was acquitted of the prison sentence against her for the crime of 'outrages against authority,' which is an achievement for freedom of expression and a setback to the use of this type of penalty to criminalize journalism.

The journalist was notified of the resolution determined by the Fourth Criminal Chamber in Mexicali, Baja California on Jan. 15. The sentence had been handed down on Aug. 31, 2020 by the Mixed Court of First Instance in Rosarito, Baja California. Previously, on Dec. 10, 2020, the Fourth Criminal Chamber decreed Olsen's ‘absolute freedom’ definitively and immediately, based on the various procedural violations that occurred during the eight years in which the journalist was subjected to proceedings."
