"Banners accusing Honduran journalists of spreading misinformation and opposing the 2025 general elections appeared in public areas of Tegucigalpa this week, sparking concern among press freedom advocates.
The banners, signed by the self-identified Honduran Popular Movement, read: “The hitmen of truth, weapons of mass disinformation, do not want elections to take place.” The images featured portraits of several Honduran journalists and listed the names of local media outlets.
The posters also showed illustrations of two explosive devices labeled 'media outlets.' The banners, large enough to be seen clearly from a distance, were placed in various parts of the city, including near the National Autonomous University of Honduras (UNAH).
Some digital news sites reported that the posters also accused the journalists of being “weapons of disinformation” and of working to block the upcoming general elections scheduled for November 2025. Similar banners targeted opposition politicians and members of the business sector. While authorities quickly removed the posters, images of them circulated widely on social media."
