"Journalist and former correspondent of Radio Corporación, Irving Guerrero Montes, was arrested in the city of León in Nicaragua by the National Police of that country under the accusation of alleged illegal possession of weapons. The arrest was confirmed by the pro-government radio station Radio Venceremos La Estación de la Amistad, owned by former mayor Tránsito Téllez.
Local journalists also corroborated the arrest. According to the police report, the journalist had in his possession a high caliber rifle, which was confiscated after neighbors reported seeing him handling the weapon on several occasions.
However, the organization Alertas Libertad de Prensa Nicaragua denounced that the arrest is, in reality, a reprisal for his journalistic practice and one more example of persecution of the independent press in Nicaragua."
