Argentine government seeks to repeal statute that regulates journalists' working conditions

"Amidst the anticipation surrounding the debate on the labor reform bill that was introduced to Congress this Thursday [Dec. 11], and after the official text was released, the government's intention to repeal various statutes that regulate labor activities has gained prominence.

Such is the case of the Professional Journalist Statute (Law 12,908), whose repeal is proposed in article 194 of the bill that was introduced through the Senate of the Nation for debate in extraordinary sessions.

The Professional Journalist Statute (Law 12.908) is the legislation that governs the working conditions of those who work for daily or periodic publications and news agencies, including roles such as directors, columnists, photojournalists and proofreaders.

The government's intention, within the framework of a strong deregulation of professional associations and activities, is to eliminate key labor regulations.

Within this framework, the labor reform specifically aims to eliminate the regulations on working hours, job security, and special compensation contained in the Journalists' Statute.”
