“Mexican journalist Alan García Zúñiga was abducted by a group of armed men on Wednesday, Jan. 23, in the state of Veracruz, a region known for being highly dangerous for journalists.

Relatives of the victim, who manages a Facebook page sharing official police information at the local and state levels, reported that he was kidnapped in the city of Poza Rica, in northern Veracruz. García Zúñiga is currently employed as a stretcher-bearer at a hospital operated by the state-owned Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex).

In the past, García Zúñiga collaborated with the Veracruz newspapers Noreste and El Dictamen. He later stopped working as a reporter and focused solely on maintaining his Facebook page. He had been enrolled in the Federal Protection Mechanism for Human Rights Defenders and Journalists under Mexico’s Interior Ministry since 2017, after surviving a shooting attack that year.”
