Alleged torturers of Mexican journalist Lydia Cacho released from jail; Article 19 appeals

Mexican judges granted changes in preventive detention for former Mexican governor of Puebla, Mario Marín Torres, as well as Adolfo Karam Beltrán, former director of the judicial police. Both are accused of committing acts of torture against journalist Lydia Cacho Ribeiro and have been permitted to leave detention.

Press freedom organization Article 19 said it will appeal the changes.

"Article 19 reiterated that the release of both defendants is not an acquittal, since they are still under trial and sentences are still pending to resolve the merits of the criminal proceedings for the crime of torture of which they are accused," reported the site e-consulta.

"'[...] Lydia Cacho's defense has presented a series of evidence that proves not only the [former governor's] possible risks of fleeing, but also risks against the victim, a woman journalist who is a victim of torture,' Article 19 said."
