“The Association of Journalists of El Salvador (APES, for its initials in Spanish) denounced before the Special Rapporteur on the situation of Human Rights Defenders of the United Nations (UN) the arbitrary detention of community journalist Víctor Barahona, who's been held for more than 11 months in the context of a regime of exception, in effect since March 2022.
'We hope that there will be a statement soon, in which the authorities are ordered to carry out an investigation of this case, to determine the responsibilities of those who have had to do with his detention,' Claudia Palacios, directive of APES, said this Monday [Dec, 9] in a press conference.
She added that they also expect a statement at the international level to force Salvadoran authorities 'to respect freedom of the press and freedom of expression in El Salvador.'”
