"The Colombian State acknowledged before the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) its international responsibility for the death of journalist and comedian Jaime Garzón, the National Agency for the Legal Defense of the State (Andje, for its acronym in Spanish) reported this Monday [June 9].

'By decision of the Colombian State (…) we have taken the decision to broadly recognize the State's international responsibility for this vile murder of Jaime Garzón,' said Yebrail Haddad Linero, director of International Legal Defense at Andje.

Garzón was shot in Bogotá on Aug. 13, 1999, by hitmen under the orders of the then head of the paramilitary United Self-Defense Forces of Colombia (AUC), Carlos Castaño, with the complicity of state agents, including José Miguel Narváez, then deputy director of the Administrative Department of Security (DAS)."
