"The National Press Association (ANP, by its Spanish acronym) condemned the attack by land squatters that caused injuries to journalist Juan Carlos Fortún and demanded that the police fulfill its specific role of preserving the life and safety of people.
The incident occurred on Thurs. morning, Dec. 8, when the El Deber reporter was covering the confrontation between neighbors who had organized to expel the invaders from the private property of Centro Turístico Kim, located 12 kilometers southeast of the city of Santa Cruz.
The ANP reported that Fortún recorded the action of the invaders who set fire to the underbrush on land very close to a fuel refinery, and then attacked the neighbors, overcoming the police cordon that was improvised on the site.
In an attempt to get away from the place, the journalist fell and immediately received a stone in the head and blows to various parts of his body. The assailants, in addition to causing a head wound, robbed him of his belongings and work equipment."
