Former civil police officer João Evangelista de Meneses, accused of taking part in the death of journalist Donizetti Adalto, was arrested on Friday (Nov. 10) on suspicion of drug trafficking. According to police chief Samuel Silveira, Evangelista de Meneses and his girlfriend were selling drugs from their home. Crack and cash were seized.

Journalist Donizetti Adalto, from Pará, was beaten and shot dead in the early hours of Sept. 19, 1998, on Avenida Marechal Castelo Branco, in the Primavera district of Teresina [in NE Brazil]. At the time, he was running for federal deputy for the Partido Popular Socialista (PPS). Former councillor Djalma Filho was in the car with the victim and, according to the Public Prosecutor's Office complaint, he was the mastermind of the crime".
