"The year 2022 has been violent for press professionals in Brazil. In the first seven months, 66 serious aggressions were registered, which involve episodes of physical violence, destruction of equipment, threats and murders. This number represents an increase of 69.2% compared to the same period in 2021, which had 39 cases. The data are from the monitoring of attacks against journalists made by the Brazilian Association of Investigative Journalism (Abraji, by its Portuguese acronym).
The general scenario of attacks has also worsened: from January to July 2022, 291 total alerts of violations against press freedom were identified - 15.5% more than in the first seven months of last year. These cases include, in addition to the most critical situations, occurrences of stigmatizing speech, lawsuits, internet restrictions, restrictions on access to information, and abuse of state power, which have victimized journalists, communicators, media outlets, and the press more broadly."
