"Campaigns to raise awareness of society and public agencies - especially the security forces - about the serious situation of violence that affects press professionals in Brazil are among the measures announced by the National Secretary of Justice, Augusto Arruda Botelho, for the newly created Observatory of Violence Against Journalists and Communicators.

Conceived by the Minister of Justice, Flávio Dino, the Observatory had its first meeting this Wed., Feb. 8, 2023, exactly one month after the attacks on the headquarters of the Three Branches in Brasilia, in which dozens of reporters were attacked by protesters calling for a coup d'état.

Arruda Botelho was announced as coordinator of the Observatory which, in his evaluation, should not just catalogue cases, but act with impact, in coordination with other agencies and in the creation of public policies aimed at reducing the escalation of violence."
