The decision was handed down after a trial by jury, which analyzed charges of aggravated murder and corruption of minors – since teenagers committed the crime. [...] The councilman was found guilty of the victim's death and also of the crime of corruption of minors. [...] José Eduardo's sentence was set at 10 years, 10 months and 15 days in prison, in a closed prison regime.
Jefferson Pureza was killed on the night of Jan. 17, 2018, with three shots to the face, while resting on the porch of his residence. [...] The radio broadcaster had arrived in the city in 2016 and stood out for his constant criticism of the previous municipal administration, led by former mayor João Batista Gomes Rodrigues, known as Batista Boiadeiro, and councilman José Eduardo. Linked to the opposition political group, he presented the program 'A Voz do Povo' (The Voice of the People), broadcast daily on the community radio station Beira Rio FM, in which he denounced alleged irregularities and conflicts involving both of them."
