Brazilian governor and son lose lawsuit against newspaper and reporter

"The governor of Mato Grosso, Mauro Mendes, of União Brasil, and his son, businessman Luís Antônio Mendes, were defeated in the state court in an attempt to censor reports that revealed, in July 2023, that Luís Antônio was being investigated in a Federal Police operation against the illegal purchase of mercury for mining. Judge Olinda de Quadros Altomare of the 11th Civil Court of Cuiabá rejected Mendes and Luís Antônio's request to have the newspaper A Gazeta's reports removed from the outlet's website. The governor and his son's request for R$660,000 (about US$122,000) in compensation from the newspaper and the reporter responsible for the investigation, Pablo Rodrigo, was also denied.

For the judge, the newspaper and the reporter 'merely and solely regularly exercised a right granted to them by the constitutional charter', a conclusion based on 'a simple reading of the journalistic material in question.'"
