Brazilian journalist sentenced to eight months over post criticizing pro-Bolsonaro lawmaker

“Known as one of the very few journalists in the state of Acre recognized for his critical and independent stance toward local political and economic powers, journalist Leonildo Rosas was sentenced to eight months in prison under a semi-open regime for criticizing federal Rep. Roberto Duarte, a member of the Republicanos party.

The pro-Bolsonaro lawmaker filed two lawsuits — one civil and one criminal — over a 2023 post by Leo Rosas (as he is better known), in which he recalled that before entering public life as a congressman, Roberto Duarte worked as a lawyer for the financial pyramid scheme Telexfree, which left thousands of people bankrupt across the country.

In the civil case, Duarte was unsuccessful, and Leonildo Rosas was found not liable. In criminal court, however, Rosas’ freedom of expression was curtailed by a ruling sentencing him to eight months in a semi-open prison regime for allegedly attacking the congressman’s honor.”
