Brazilian journalists outraged by reserve Army colonel's statements they view as threat to democracy

"Statements made by Army reserve colonel Márcio Saldanha Walker during an event at the Public Security Secretariat (SSP, for its Portuguese acronym) of Alagoas [in Brazil] on Friday [Nov. 14] provoked repudiation from class entities and the Government of Alagoas itself.

During the course promoted by the SSP (Public Security Secretariat), the speaker stated that it would be necessary to 'summon the reporter' for questioning or 'explore the lives' of journalists from Alagoas, and that the SSP's intelligence would do this work. Several articles from local media outlets were cited as examples of threats to police work.

The Union of Professional Journalists of Alagoas (Sindjornal) and the National Federation of Journalists (Fenaj) issued a statement of repudiation, considering the stance a 'serious threat to the democratic rule of law' and a flirtation with the return of the dictatorship."
