"Clarice Herzog, a publicist and widow of journalist Vladimir Herzog, has been awarded a lifetime pension due to her husband's murder by the Brazilian state during the military dictatorship 50 years ago.
According to a preliminary ruling by the Federal Court, Clarice will receive nearly R$35,000 (US $6,075) per month. Judge Anderson Santos da Silva cited her age—83 years old—and advanced-stage Alzheimer’s disease as key factors in the decision. The ruling will still be reviewed by the Regional Federal Court of the First Region.
In October 1975, while serving as the news director for TV Cultura in São Paulo, Vladimir Herzog voluntarily presented himself at a unit of the Army’s intelligence operations after being summoned to testify about alleged ties to the Brazilian Communist Party.
There, he was tortured and killed by military personnel, who fabricated a suicide by hanging. Following her husband’s death, Clarice Herzog launched a movement to uncover the truth about his murder and hold those responsible accountable."
