Brazilian news organizations condemn threats against journalists for covering coups

The main organizations defending journalists in Brazil have expressed their support for reporters Gabriela Biló and Thaisa Oliveira, from Folha de S.Paulo, who have been suffering intimidation due to their coverage of the Jan. 8, 2023, coup in Brasília. The Brazilian Association of Investigative Journalism (Abraji, for its initials in Portuguese), the Brazilian Press Association (ABI) and the National Federation of Journalists (Fenaj) have condemned the attacks, which include death threats, disclosure of personal data and a smear campaign on social media.

The journalists became the target of cyber harassment last Friday (March 21), after the publication of reports about those arrested for the attacks on the three branches of government. The threats were recorded in a police report, and Folha's legal department is following the case.
