Brazilian organizations promote an act in São Paulo in defense of journalism and democracy

"The Brazilian Association of Investigative Journalism (Abraji, by its Portuguese acronym) and 12 other organizations announced this Wed. Sep. 21, the call for an act in defense of press professionals and democracy. The event is a response to the escalation of threats, aggressions, physical and virtual attacks, and attempts of censorship and intimidation against journalists. According to Abraji's monitoring of violations against press freedom in the country, there are already 353 attacks in 2022, an increase of 12% compared to the same period in 2021, a year that saw a record number of attacks (453).

The Act in Defense of Journalism and Democracy will be held on Tues. Sept. 27, from 7 p.m. (Brasília time), at Auditorium 239 - Prof. Paulo Barros de Carvalho, at the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo (PUC-SP).

At the event, organizations that fight for press freedom and human rights will present recent data on violence against journalists and the challenges faced by professionals in Brazil. A manifesto in defense of the free exercise of journalism and democracy will also be released.
