Brazilian Public Prosecutor's Office seeks payment from Universal Church for alleged judicial harassment of journalist

“The Federal Public Prosecutor's Office of Brazil is seeking payment of 5 million reais [US$867,000] from the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God for damages to the justice system, to access to justice and to freedom of expression and press, promoted through judicial harassment against journalist João Paulo Cuenca.

According to a civil investigation conducted by the Public Prosecutor's Office, the church was responsible for more than 100 virtually identical lawsuits filed in 19 states by church pastors against the journalist. The lawsuits were a reaction to a publication by Cuenca, in June 2020, on the social network Twitter (now X), about a report on the allocation of federal government communication funds to radio and television channels belonging to evangelical churches.”
