Buenos Aires Bar Association warns President Mileis’s attacks on journalists threaten freedom of expression

"The Public Bar Association of the Federal Capital [of Argentina] expressed its 'deep concern' over statements made by President Javier Milei against journalists and news outlets. It considered these remarks pose 'a serious risk to freedom of expression and democratic coexistence,' and warned they could lead to 'an escalation of harassment and violence against press workers.'

In a statement, the institution, led by Ricardo Gil Lavedra, said Milei has referred to journalists 'with obscene epithets and encouraged his followers to insult them,' which it deemed 'unacceptable in a liberal democracy.'

'The words of the country's most important official are followed by a flood of messages from supporters that echo aggression and hostility,' the text, released this Wednesday [October 2], continued."
