"FLIP welcomes the appeals court decision of the Administrative Court of Antioquia, Colombia, confirming the responsibility of the State in the case of the murder of journalist Edison Molina. This decision was made based on the absolutely passive position adopted by the State in the face of the situation of danger faced by the journalist. It also recognizes that the crime was related to journalistic denunciations made by Molina. [...]
Molina was murdered on Sept. 11, 2013 in Puerto Berrío, Antioquia. Months before the murder, the journalist had reported to the Attorney General's Office the threats and aggressions he was being victim of. However, the Prosecutor's Office merely ordered the police to carry out patrolling. [...] The Prosecutor's Office did not carry out a diligent investigation to find the perpetrators of the threats, nor did it refer the case to the National Protection Unit. For the Court, the measures taken 'evidently did not correspond to the security situation' of the journalist."
