Colombian Media Association calls on citizens to protect press freedom in face of 'alarmingly deteriorating levels'

“The Colombian Media Association (AMI, by its initials in Spanish) –the organization that represents most of the country's print media [...]– published a statement [on Oct. 3] urging citizens to protect the rights of freedom of the press, of information and of expression, in the face of constant threats that seek to ‘limit democracy in Colombia.’

‘The exercise of journalism and the work of the media has been the object of repeated and increasingly aggressive declarations and actions aimed at curtailing the freedom of the press, freedom of expression, and the right to information,’ the association said in the statement.

The media organizations that signed the document agreed that the consequences of these threats restrict democracy at a time when indicators of press freedom, violence against journalists and disregard for international standards of press and freedom of expression are reaching ‘alarmingly deteriorating levels.’"
