Colombian president meets with Press Freedom Foundation after months of tension

“After months of tensions between the Colombian Presidency and the Press Freedom Foundation (FLIP, for its acronym in Spanish), President Gustavo Petro has met with three organization delegates. The meeting was also attended by an envoy of Reporters without Borders, the international organization that monitors press rights.

The president, whose criticisms of the media and journalists have produced harsh responses from FLIP criticizing his lack of commitment to free expression, promised to implement a direct channel 'to urgently attend to any situation of risk faced by journalists, ensuring a rapid and effective response.' This is due to the difficult situation for the practice of journalism in several areas of Colombia, which has resulted in the murder of six journalists in the last two years."
