"For 6 months now the National Protection Unit (UNP, by its Spanish acronym) has been denying access to information to the family of journalist Rafael Moreno, murdered in October last year in Montelíbano, Córdoba [Colombia]. The family seeks access to the documents of the individual protection process and risk assessment, as well as the implementation of the protection scheme that the journalist had at the time of his murder. This Friday, the Constitutional Court will consider whether to select this case for review, which implies that the case will be analyzed and that this Court will be the one to make a decision on the merits.
Before his murder, Moreno had denounced before the Attorney General's Office and the UNP a series of death threats of which he had been a victim since 2019. Precisely for this reason, the family is seeking access to key information to guarantee their right to truth, justice and comprehensive reparation for the family. This is because there have been failures in the protection process carried out by the UNP."
