Mexico: Columnist for The Washington Post and journalist for Animal Político were spied on by López Obrador's government with Pegasus spyware, investigation reveals

"Contrary to promises by Mexico's President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, the government he heads has not stopped using the Pegasus spyware illegally -- the cell phones of at least two journalists and a human rights defender were infected with the powerful intrusive system between 2019 and 2021.

Citizen Lab, the flagship expert lab on Pegasus, based at the University of Toronto, confirmed that the cell phones of journalist Ricardo Raphael, plus a colleague from Animal Político -- who wanted to remain anonymous -- and Tamaulipas activist Raymundo Ramos Vázquez were attacked with Pegasus spyware during the current administration.

Several elements of this investigation, carried out collaboratively by Proceso, Red en Defensa de los Derechos Digitales (R3D), Animal Político and Aristegui Noticias, point to the fact that the Ministry of National Defense (Sedena, by its Spanish acronym), which was NSO Group's first client in the world, was behind the Pegasus attacks. In addition to these three victims, whose infections were confirmed by Citizen Lab, there are other proven cases that will be revealed in subsequent installments."
