"The number of violations of freedom of expression in Costa Rica has shown a sustained increase in recent years.

While there were seven alerts in 2022, the number quadrupled in 2023, reaching 28 alerts and a total of 38 victims. In 2024, the number rose to 32 alerts and 40 victims, a 14.28% increase in the total number of attacks against the press in Costa Rica and a 5.26% increase in the total number of victims.

Most of the attacks were initiated by the executive branch, nine of them by President Rodrigo Chaves. This is reflected in the "2024 Report on Alerts of Violations of Freedom of Expression Against Journalists and Media Workers in Costa Rica," prepared for the third consecutive year by the Institute for Press and Freedom of Expression (IPLEX, for its initials in Spanish)."
