Daniel Ortega's regime dissolves Journalists Association of Nicaragua and 14 other NGOs

"This Monday [May 26], the regime of Daniel Ortega dissolved another 15 non-profit organizations, among them the historic Nicaraguan Association of Journalists (UPN, for its initials in Spanish), created in 1979 after the triumph of the Sandinista revolution. With this new repressive wave, more than 5,670 NGOs have now been cancelled since December 2018, as reported in the official bulletin La Gaceta.

The decision was executed by Nicaragua's Minister of the Interior, María Amelia Coronel, through two ministerial agreements. Of the 15 entities affected, six were unilaterally closed for ‘legal non-compliance,’ including UPN. Nine others requested their voluntary dissolution.

According to the Ministry of Interior, UPN was cancelled for failing to submit its financial statements for fiscal years 2023 and 2024, and for maintaining an expired board of directors since May 2017. Founded on Sept. 13, 1979, the organization was originally composed of journalists who supported the revolution."
