El Faro published interviews this week with two leaders of the Barrio 18 gang who revealed how the gangs played a leading role in Nayib Bukele's rise to power, and gave details of the agreements they had with officials of Nuevas Ideas, the ruling party. According to information obtained by the media outlet, the arrest warrants are for the crimes of illicit association and apology for crimes.

‘Any arrest or raid on our homes will be for having done journalism,’ said El Faro's editor in chief Óscar Martínez, who considers that if any arrest is made, the government would take ‘a step of no return’ in its relationship with the press, which is already hostile."
