Ecuadoran journalists warn new intelligence law may force disclosure

"The Organic Law of Intelligence in Ecuador is ready to be go into effect once it's published in the Official Gazette, but several of its articles worry the journalistic community due to how it may impact many of its activities.

It is comprised of 58 articles, general, transitory and derogatory provisions, of which several are of concern to civil society, essentially because the national government will not need permission of the president of the National Court of Justice to initiate intelligence and counterintelligence activities.

The ruling party incorporated a general provision which states that ‘natural or legal public or private persons have the obligation to deliver in a secure, direct, free and timely manner the required information’. In this section, the media or journalists are not excluded."
