During the process, the Special Prosecutor's Office for Crimes Committed against Freedom of Expression (Feadle, for its acronym in Spanish) managed to prove to the judge that the motive for the murder of Javier Valdez was due to his work as a journalist.

For the murder, Heriberto 'P,' alias 'El Koala,' had already been sentenced to 14 years 8 months on Feb. 27, 2020. As an intellectual author, Dámaso López Serrano, 'El Minilic,' imprisoned in the United States, has an arrest warrant. Another implicated individual, Luis Ildefonso, alias 'El Diablo,' was assassinated in Sonora, so he could not be arrested or tried."
