El Toque journalists tell stories about Cuba from abroad

"Following the massive resignation of its entire team in Cuba after pressure from the Cuban government, El Toque reinvented itself to continue reflecting the reality of the island. They have used a multimedia journalistic approach and remain close to the concerns of ordinary Cubans, even if from thousands of miles away.

Doing truthful and objective journalism without being on the ground is difficult, but not impossible. 'If during the pandemic, the big news agencies began to report using WhatsApp, why shouldn't we do the same,' said José Jasán Nieves, general editor of El Toque. This independent news outlet manages to tell stories about Cuba from a 'virtual newsroom' spread across seven countries."
