Europe asks Mexico to protect journalists and activists; government reproaches 'coup strategy'

"The Parliament of the European Union (EU) asked Mexico this Thursday, Mach 10, to ensure 'the protection' of journalists and human rights defenders, following the murder of seven reporters so far this year. This provoked a strong reaction from this Latin American government accusing the institution of joining a coup strategy.

The Parliament's resolution, which is not binding, singles out Mexican president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, for using 'his rhetoric to denigrate and intimidate independent journalists, media owners, and activists,' according to the institution's press release.'"
