The European Union (EU) and the Office of the Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression (RELE, for its acronym in Spanish) of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) separately condemned the murder of Mexican journalist Víctor Morales, whose body was found on June 28 lifeless and with signs of torture in the municipality of Jiquipilas, in the Mexican state of Chiapas.
In a statement, the EU and the nations of Norway and Switzerland expressed their condolences and solidarity with Morales' family, colleagues and friends. They also urged the Mexican authorities to create "favorable environments and protection so that journalists in Mexico can exercise their activities freely, without putting their lives at risk" and to avoid "zones of silence, where no journalist dares to work."
In a statement, the IACHR, condemned the murder and urged the Mexican State to investigate the crime "thoroughly, diligently and exhaustively, considering his profession as a possible motive, and to punish those responsible."
Morales was the editor of the digital news site Realidades, in which he covered issues related to armed confrontations, citizen security and forced displacement.
