Former Mexican governor threatens legal action against journalist

"ARTICLE 19 condemns the legal threat made by Francisco García Cabeza de Vaca, former governor of [the Mexican state of] Tamaulipas, against Martha Olivia López, director of the digital media outlet En un 2×3, correspondent of the Public Radio System's Canal Catorce network, and collaborator for the media outlets Astillero Informa and Rompeviento TV. The events occurred after the journalist published a news report that revealed that human remains were found in clandestine graves in the La Retama ranch, in Tamaulipas, which is allegedly owned by García Cabeza de Vaca. On Aug. 25, the politician denied the facts and published on his Twitter account that he reserved the right to proceed legally against the author of the article. This type of threats seeks to intimidate the freedom of expression of journalists and media by intimidating the press from publishing certain information about the actions of public officials.
