"Journalist Gerardo Torres Rentería was shot to death by a group of armed men on the night of May 11, 2023, inside his private home located on 2nd Street in the Icacos neighborhood, a few meters from Avenida Costera Miguel Áleman and the main entrance of the facilities of the Eighth Naval Region in Acapulco, Guerrero, Mexico.
The 59-year-old reporter suffered at least three gunshot wounds. His attackers fled the scene. Torres Rentería had served as a correspondent for the US network Telemundo, the British news agency Reuters, and TV Azteca for several years.
Among countries without war conflicts, Mexico witnessed the highest number of journalist fatalities in 2022, with 11 reporters murdered, according to a report published on Dec. 9, 2023, by the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ)."
