Global press organizations sign Santiago +30 Declaration for consolidating free expression

“On the morning of Thursday, May 2, the Santiago-Chile 2024 International Media Meeting was held, an event in which the National Press Association (ANP, for its acronym in Spanish) [of Chile] served as host along with the Catholic University. The main press organizations at a global level, such as the World Association of News Publishers (WAN-IFRA) and the Inter-American Press Association (IAPA), participated.

The activity took place prior to the event organized by UNESCO and the Government of Chile at the GAM for World Press Freedom Day and was the occasion where the Santiago +30 Declaration was solemnly signed. This document is an update of the declaration prepared by UNESCO in 1994 in Chile and which has been a framework to define press freedom in the world.

'What does the Santiago +30 Declaration do? It calls on States, intergovernmental organizations, technology companies, media and journalism in general to undertake a collaborative effort that consolidates free expression as a fundamental human right and as a cornerstone of democratic and informed societies,' Eduardo Sepúlveda Muñoz, president of the ANP, said during the event.”
