Group of journalists suffered intimidation by armed group after news coverage in Colombia

"A delegation of Asocaña [the Association of Sugar Cane Growers of Colombia, by its acronym in Spanish] and several journalists were intimidated on Friday, June 23, in a rural area of the municipality of El Cerrito, [in the department of] Valle, while they were covering the planting of trees on the El Fuerte field [...].

A photojournalists from El Tiempo [newspaper] and a news team consisting of a reporter and a cameraman from the Noti5 [network], got trapped in the middle of an exchange of gunfire, which took place around 1:00 pm.

'We left the site [of the coverage] at 12:15 pm, we were accompanied by the Asocaña team and we were being escorted by a motorized [unit] of the National Army,' the Noti5 reporter said [...]. 'When we were on the road, we saw the motorcycle in which the soldiers were riding lying on the ground, and we thought that they had had an accident, but then we saw that the soldiers were looking to hide. It was then when we began to hear gun fire and we also saw how the soldiers were shooting at the mountain,' she said.
