"The Tenth Court of First Criminal Instance [of Guatemala] convicted this Tuesday, Feb. 21, attorney Mario Castañeda, who defended the president of the newspaper elPeriódico, José Rubén Zamora. [...] Judge Jimmi Bremmer issued a three-year commuted prison sentence against the lawyer for the crime of conspiracy to obstruct justice.
[...]
The head of the Special Prosecutor's Office Against Impunity (FECI, by its Spanish acronym), Rafael Curruchiche, said the accusations against Castañeda arose within the framework of a new investigation that came from information received by the unit that he directs.
'It was possible to establish a possible conspiracy to obstruct an ongoing investigation related to money possibly proceeding from money laundering or other assets that Mr. José Rubén Zamora and the entity Aldea Global S.A. received in 2013,' Curruchiche said.

According to Curruchiche, Zamora was aided by Flora Silva Flores, then financial manager of the entity Aldea Global S.A., and lawyers Romeo Montoya García and Mario Estuardo Castañeda y Castañeda."
