"The Association of Journalists of Guatemala (APG, for its Spanish acronym) denounced this Mon. Dec. 12 that they registered 105 attacks against freedom of expression in 2022. Most of them were allegedly carried out by the Judiciary and the Public Prosecutor's Office of Guatemala.
Among the more than 100 attacks, there are 10 cases of criminalization and judicial harassment, according to the report called Estado de la Situación de la Libertad de Expresión [State of the Situation of Freedom of Expression] presented by the APG on Monday.
The imprisonment of journalist José Rubén Zamora Marroquín, president of the newspaper elPeriódico, was catalogued as the most 'emblematic' case of the pattern of judicial harassment, according to the same source. 'It is of enormous concern that the proceeding against Zamora is a preview to an intensification of the criminal persecution against the press and that it will lead to more arrests,' according to a statement released by APG."
