"Guatemalan journalist José Rubén Zamora, imprisoned since 2022 in controversial cases opened by the Prosecutor's Office, fears being killed in prison, an official with Reporters Without Borders (RSF, for its acronym in Spanish) told AFP on Wednesday [Oct. 8].

The 69-year-old journalist, founder of the now-defunct newspaper El Periódico, has spent more than 1,100 days in prison for alleged money laundering and another case that international organizations describe as an attempt to silence him for publications about corruption by the previous right-wing government.

'Zamora fears for his physical safety in prison (…). It's worrying because he believes he's not safe even under the state's protection,' said RSF's advocacy coordinator for Latin America, Brazilian Bia Barbosa, in an interview with AFP."
