"Guatemalan journalist José Rubén Zamora Marroquín completed one year in prison this Saturday [July 29] since his arrest on July 29, 2022, only five days after voicing strong criticism of corruption allegations against the government of president Alejandro Giammattei.
'It has been an extremely difficult and complicated year, but we know that my father is innocent. The State has held him hostage for 365 days,' Zamora Marroquín's son, José Zamora, told EFE.
Zamora Marroquín was arrested at home on July 29, 2022, only five days after voicing strong criticism of Giammattei and his inner circle for corruption allegations in the pages of the newspaper he owned, elPeriódico. The arrest of the journalist was carried out by the Guatemalan Public Prosecutor's Office, whose leadership has been sanctioned by the United States under accusations of 'undermining' justice in the Central American country.
