Guatemalan justice system once again charges journalist José Rubén Zamora

"This Tues. [Jan. 31], a Guatemalan court charged renowned journalist and main opponent of President Alejandro Giammattei, José Rubén Zamora Marroquín, for alleged obstruction of justice.

This brings to two the number of criminal proceedings opened against the founder of El Periódico. Zamora Marroquín is also accused of money laundering, for which he has been detained for six months in a military prison north of Guatemala City. Now, the Public Prosecutor's Office has lashed out at him for having 'diverted the investigation against him.'

'It's a criminal proceeding without a case, it's an invention of the Prosecutor's Office to keep me in prison,' he defended himself before the press. Zamora Marroquín was the voice behind the renowned investigative newspaper that for three decades pointed out state corruption in this Central American country."
